April 25: Up to date

Still no word from the hospital about when they want to hack into me again so it will be late next week at the earliest before anything surgical happens.

Now that P and I have agreed on a worst case plan that I can live (or die) with I feel able to consider the less terminal alternatives.  After all, I am only in my 50’s, healthy and reasonably fit.  I have never had a drug problem, I don’t drink to excess and my diet is pretty good.  Every year for the last 15 or so my family doctor has given me a complete checkup; the most recent was October last year.  Other than the depression and slightly elevated cholesterol levels I have exactly no health issues at all.  Since I retired two years ago I am living a pretty low-stress life and have all the time I need to rest without worrying about where the money is going to come from.  Isn’t socialised medicine a wonderful invention?  I think everyone deserves it.   I am also feeling healthy and strong and can find no palpable lymph nodes or other indications of advanced infection.

Maybe I can beat this thing, or at least force a stalemate.  As long as I feel healthy and more or less pain free I think I can handle a long course of treatment, being tired a lot and having a billiard ball head.  I might treat myself to a false beard or a Harpo Marx wig.  There has to be some way to laugh about it.

Even if everything goes pear-shaped immediately I doubt if I will be out of circulation before about a year, which is long enough to do quite a lot of useful stuff.  Or, indeed, a very large amount of damage 🙂
